How to do balayage highlights at home step by step

Raise your hand if you've never had highlights! Since they were introduced to the world of hairdressing in the 1940s, very few (lucky) people have been able to resist them. Either you have gorgeous hair with a beautiful color, or you'll probably have to resort to this technique to look more beautiful and brighter.

One of the most popular types of highlights today is the Balayage technique. Therefore, today we want to show you how to do Balayage highlights at home.

Let's get started!

What is the "balayage" technique?

First of all, let me explain what the Balayage technique is, in case anyone isn't familiar with it.

Balayage comes from the French verb balayer, which means to sweep or comb, actions that perfectly describe how this technique is used. it originated in France in the 1970s.It consists of dyeing strand by strand with a sweeping motion.

Thanks to these movements, stunning color combinations of varying intensities are created, with much smoother and more fluid transitions between strands. Furthermore, since the roots are left untouched, your hair will appear to have much more movement.

The result?

A much more natural gradient that you'll fall in love with.

Difference between balayage and babylights

The main differences between balayage and babylights lie primarily in their application area. While babylights are applied throughout the hair, balayage is only done from the mid-lengths to the ends. In addition, balayage offers a natural gradient effect, since the strands on which this technique is applied are selected one by one; But babylights provide a uniform color throughout the hair and tend to lighten it.

How to do balayage highlights at home

Now, let's get down to business! We're going to explain step by step how to do balayage highlights at home.

Everything you need to do balayage highlights:

  • 20 volume hydrogen peroxide.
  • The dye or bleach you want to use.
  • A brush to apply the dye to your hair.
  • A bowl to mix the dye.
  • Cling film.
  • And gloves to avoid getting stained.

Mixing the components

The first thing you need to do is mix the bleaching powder or dye with the hydrogen peroxide (it's important that it's 20 volume) in the container you've prepared. Take this opportunity to cut several pieces of cling film. You'll need them to cover your hair once you've applied the dye.

Study your face shape

If you want to achieve the best effect and for this balayage technique to truly help brighten your faceand give movement to your hair, you need to first assess your face shape to know where to place the highlights. We recommend highlighting areas near the face and applying the dye to both sides of the strands, always in a vertical orientation, for a more natural finish.

Prepare your hair

Detangle it and divide it into several sections starting at the back. It's important to take your time to make the sections well and especially to detangle it thoroughly so that the result is as beautiful and professional as possible.

Apply the dye

Now it's time to apply the mixture you made earlier with the dye or bleaching powder and hydrogen peroxide. Place the strand on a piece of cling film and apply the dye to both sides. Start at the desired length (never at the roots, as this technique isn't applied there) and sweep the dye with the brush towards the ends. The dye should be most intense at the ends, but for a natural finish, never lighten them more than two shades compared to the rest of your hair. As for the amount, it will depend on the effect you want to achieve. If you want a very intense color, you'll need to do quite a few highlights, but if you only want to brighten certain areas, a few fine highlights in specific sections of your hair are enough.

Once you've finished dyeing the strand, fold the plastic wrap upwards so it's completely covered and the dye penetrates better.

Let it sit

Once you've done the highlights, you need to let them sit for about 20-30 minutes. However, every hair dye is different, so it's important that you strictly follow the instructions for the product you're using.

Wash your hair

Once you see that the highlights have reached the desired shade, wash your hair as usual. Use a neutral shampoo, as it's not necessary to use a balayage shampoo from the beginning, but if you want to maintain the highlights for as long as possible, we recommend getting one.
