The perfume you spray on your skin is the result of a complex manufacturing process that transforms natural and synthetic raw materials into a finished fragrance. Understanding how perfumes are made helps you appreciate the craft and the cost behind each bottle.
How is perfume made?
Perfume creation involves two main stages: the extraction of aromatic raw materials and the formulation of the final fragrance.
Extraction methods for natural ingredients
Steam distillation
The most widely used method. Steam is passed through plant material — petals, leaves, bark or roots — and the volatile aromatic molecules evaporate with it. When the steam cools, it separates into water (hydrosol) and essential oil. This technique works well for lavender, rose, eucalyptus and most herbs, though the heat can alter some delicate molecules.
Cold pressing (expression)
Used exclusively for citrus fruits. The peel is mechanically compressed to extract the essential oil without heat, which preserves the fresh, bright character of lemon, bergamot, orange and grapefruit. Brands like Hermès and Chanel rely on cold-pressed bergamot for their fresh citrus compositions.
Solvent extraction
Chemical solvents are used to extract aromatic compounds from delicate flowers — like jasmine, tuberose or rose — that would be damaged by heat. The result is a waxy substance called a concrete. When the wax is removed with alcohol, the remaining material is an absolute, the most concentrated and faithful form of the raw material.
Enfleurage
An ancient technique almost never used commercially today. Flowers are pressed against a layer of fat, which absorbs the aromatic molecules. The fat is then washed with alcohol to extract the fragrance. The process is extraordinarily labour-intensive, which is why it has largely been replaced by solvent extraction.
Supercritical CO₂ extraction
A modern technique that uses carbon dioxide under high pressure to extract aromatic molecules with minimal heat. The result is highly accurate to the natural scent of the ingredient. Used for specialty ingredients in high-end perfumery.
The formulation process
Once the raw materials are prepared, a perfumer (also called a nez, or nose) composes the formula. A modern perfume can contain anywhere from 20 to over 200 different ingredients, each added in precise proportions.
The olfactory pyramid
Perfumers structure fragrances in three layers:
- Top notes: The first impression — citrus, light herbs, green notes. Evaporate within 15–30 minutes.
- Heart notes: The core of the fragrance — florals, spices, fruits. Last 2–4 hours.
- Base notes: The foundation — woods, musks, resins, vanilla. Can last 6+ hours on skin.
Maceration and aging
After the formula is mixed with alcohol, the perfume undergoes maceration — a resting period that allows the ingredients to fully integrate. This process can last from a few weeks to several months. Aging is what gives a perfume its smooth, cohesive character rather than a jarring collection of separate notes.
Filtration
Before bottling, the perfume is chilled (a process called chilling or crash cooling) and filtered to remove any waxes or resins that might cloud the liquid at low temperatures. The result is a clear, stable fragrance ready for bottling.
