How to care for your skin after sun exposure

Glorious sun-kissed skin is here. But with it comes something that isn't always visible to the naked eye.

Sun exposure, even without causing a burn, puts your skin under significant stress. It leads to dehydration, generates collagen-attacking free radicals, and temporarily weakens the skin barrier. The result doesn't always hurt — but it's always there.

The good news? A proper after-sun routine can reverse much of this damage before it builds up.

What really happens to your skin after sun exposure

The sun doesn't just give you a tan. It also dehydrates, oxidises and causes inflammation.

After hours of exposure, even without visible redness or tightness, your skin is working hard to repair itself. It loses water faster than usual, the skin barrier is compromised, and skin cells enter repair mode.

If you don't provide what it needs at that moment — hydration, antioxidants, and soothing care — the repair process is slower and less effective. This accumulated damage, day after summer day without after-sun care, is what appears years later as sunspots, loss of firmness, and premature ageing.

The ultimate after-sun routine

Your after-sun routine doesn't need to be complicated, but it must follow the right order.

Step one: The shower

Keep the water lukewarm, never hot. Hot water after sun exposure irritates already sensitive skin and strips away the natural protective lipids. Opt for lukewarm or cool water — whatever feels best — and use a gentle body wash that won't strip away moisture.

Step two: The antioxidant serum

This is the most important step, and often the most overlooked.

Antioxidants — like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Niacinamide — neutralise the free radicals generated by sun exposure before they can cause damage. When applied after showering, while skin is clean and receptive, they penetrate more effectively and work for hours.

Don't wait for signs of sun damage to appear before reaching for antioxidants. In skincare, as in life, prevention is always more effective than correction.

Step three: Intense hydration

After a day in the sun, your skin is thirsty.

A good moisturiser helps replenish lost water and reinforces the skin barrier. Apply it while your skin is still slightly damp after showering for maximum effect — this locks moisture into the skin instead of letting it evaporate.

For the body, apply a generous amount of lotion. Summer is not the time to be stingy with hydration.

Step four: Eye contour care

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most vulnerable to dehydration. After a day in the sun — especially if you've been wearing sunglasses that trap heat around the area — a hydrating and soothing eye cream will make a visible difference by morning.

The after-sun "don'ts"

Avoiding common mistakes is just as vital as following the right routine.

Don't exfoliate. Sun-exposed skin is sensitised. Scrubbing at this stage — even if it’s part of your usual routine — will cause irritation and inflammation. Give it at least 48 hours before exfoliating again.

Skip the retinol. Retinol is a powerful active that increases the skin's sensitivity to light. Following sun exposure, your skin isn't in the right state to process it. Save it for when your skin has fully recovered.

Don't forget to drink water. Topical hydration helps, but internal hydration is just as crucial. The sun dehydrates your entire body, not just your skin.

The skin you care for today

Sun damage is cumulative.

Every summer day without after-sun care is a day your skin repairs a little less than it should. That deficit builds up silently over the years until it shows up in the mirror in ways that are no longer easy to fix.

The plus side is that skin has an extraordinary capacity for regeneration when given the right tools. A consistent summer after-sun routine doesn't just protect — it actively improves the quality of your skin all season long.

The tan will fade. The care remains.
