The tan that lasts: how to maintain it as summer begins to fade

August is drawing to a close, and your tan will too, if you don't take care of it.

But it doesn't have to be that way. That golden glow you've spent weeks perfecting at the beach or pool can last much longer with the right routine. The difference between skin that stays radiant well into September and skin that fades in a fortnight isn't the sun — it's what you do afterwards.

Why tans fade

Your skin is constantly regenerating.

Surface cells — the ones containing the melanin that gives you that bronzed look — naturally shed every three to four weeks. While it's a continuous process you can't stop, you certainly can slow it down.

Anything that speeds up cell renewal also speeds up tan loss. Dehydration dries out the skin, causing dead cells to flake off sooner. Harsh exfoliation strips away the layers with the most pigment. Chlorine and sea salt, without the right after-sun care, only accelerate the process.

Essentially, maintaining your tan is about caring for your skin so it renews its cells as slowly as possible.

Hydration: your best friend

Well-hydrated skin holds onto a tan much longer than dry skin.

The reason is simple: hydrated skin is more elastic, more resilient, and renews itself in a more orderly, slower fashion. Dry skin flakes, cracks, and loses colour unevenly — those lighter patches on elbows, knees, and the décolletage as a tan fades are telltale signs of dehydration.

Applying a body lotion every day after showering — while skin is still damp — is the simplest and most effective way to prolong your glow. In areas prone to dryness — like shins, knees, and elbows — extra nourishment with an oil or butter makes a visible difference.

Protect to prolong

Late summer sun is still sun.

Even if the temperature drops and it feels less intense, UV radiation is still very much present in August and September. Skipping sun protection now doesn't just damage the skin — it can lead to dark spots and uneven tone that ruins the tan you’ve worked for all summer.

Sunscreen helps protect both your skin and your tan at the same time.

The tan that stays

With the right care, a summer tan can last well into autumn.

Daily hydration and sun protection: these are the steps that make the difference between a glow that lasts and one that disappears in two weeks.

Summer might be ending, but your tan doesn't have to.
