There was a moment when I realised I wasn't sleeping well.
It wasn't insomnia — it was something else. I’d get into bed with my phone, thoughts from the day still racing, without any transition between being "on" and being at rest. And my sleep quality was paying the price.
Almost without noticing, I started creating a evening ritual. Little habits I added one by one. The difference was instant.
The power of small gestures
A ritual doesn’t have to be complicated or long. You don’t need an hour or a massive checklist. You just need consistency — repeating the same actions every night until your brain recognises them as the signal to slow down.
Mine takes less than twenty minutes. But those twenty minutes change everything.
The scent that sets the mood for rest
It all starts with scent.
There is something about our sense of smell that works directly on the nervous system — faster than any other sense. A specific aroma, repeated every night in the same context, becomes a conditioned cue: when you smell it, your body knows it’s time to unwind.
The reed diffuser in my bedroom is the first thing I notice when I walk in at night. That soft, steady scent that’s been there all day, but somehow feels different late in the evening.
And then there are the sheets. Ever since I started using a fabric mist on my bedding, getting into bed has felt different. That "clean" smell — fresh, soft, cozy — is one of the little luxuries I appreciate most at the end of the day. It doesn't take much — a few sprays before you tuck yourself in and the sheets smell exactly how you want them to.
The shower as a transition
A night-time shower isn't the same as a morning one.
The morning shower wakes you up. The evening shower closes the day — washing away what the skin has accumulated over hours and preparing the body for rest.
What has changed my evening routine the most is applying a body mist after showering. Because the scent settles on the skin in a completely different way. Softer, more long-lasting.
Skincare as a moment for yourself
My evening skincare routine is the one time of day that is truly mine.
Cleanser. Toner. Serum. Moisturiser. Four steps, two minutes, in front of the mirror with the lights dimmed. No notifications, no screens, nothing to do except take care of yourself.
It’s the moment your skin gets what it needs to regenerate overnight — and the moment your mind starts to let go of what it no longer needs.
Over time, I’ve learned that this little pause in front of the mirror is worth more than it seems. Not just for the products — though they help — but for what it represents: taking a moment for yourself before the day ends.
The result
I sleep better. That’s it.
It doesn't need a complex explanation. Since I started an evening ritual, the quality of my sleep has improved noticeably. Not because of any miracle product — but because of the cumulative effect of small gestures telling my body and mind that the day is over and it’s time to rest.
The scent of the sheets. The reed diffuser. The body mist after the shower. The skincare routine. Twenty minutes that are worth hours.
